Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2 network, Base, has activated its Azul upgrade on mainnet, introducing multiproofs and a revamped client stack designed to reduce reliance on centralized components. Multiproofs allow multiple proof systems to verify transactions simultaneously, strengthening security and fault tolerance while distributing trust away from any single operator. The new client stack further diversifies the network's infrastructure, a key step in Base's broader roadmap toward becoming a fully decentralized, permissionless network. Base has grown into one of the most active Ethereum L2s by transaction volume since its 2023 launch, and the Azul upgrade represents a significant technical milestone. Full decentralization would remove Coinbase's ability to unilaterally control the sequencer, aligning Base more closely with Ethereum's core ethos of trustless, censorship-resistant infrastructure.
