Rio de Janeiro police dismantled a cryptocurrency mining operation linked to Comando Vermelho, one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organisations, revealing an emerging model of gang-run digital asset generation. Officers discovered approximately 30 mining computers stacked on shelves inside a room on an apparently abandoned property. The machines were powered by an illegal connection tapped directly from a nearby utility pole, eliminating operating costs and making the setup harder to trace through conventional financial channels. The find suggests organised crime groups are increasingly exploiting crypto mining as a low-profile revenue stream, converting stolen electricity into digital money with minimal direct exposure to traditional banking systems. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific cryptocurrencies being mined or the estimated value generated by the operation.
