A Glassnode analysis has identified approximately $500 billion worth of Bitcoin that could be compromised by sufficiently advanced quantum computers, highlighting structural weaknesses in how portions of the existing supply are stored. The blockchain data firm mapped specific vulnerabilities within Bitcoin's UTXO set, flagging exposed public keys as the primary attack surface. Centralized exchanges emerged as a notable weak point, as wallets that have previously revealed their public keys during transactions are particularly susceptible. While quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography do not yet exist, the research underscores the long-term risk if the network does not migrate to quantum-resistant cryptographic standards. The findings add urgency to ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin developer community around post-quantum security upgrades.
