Cosmos-based cross-chain protocol Gravity Bridge suffered a $5.4 million exploit after attackers allegedly gained control of a private key, giving them unauthorized access to the bridge's funds. The attacker drained USDC, ether, tether, and PAYG tokens before moving to obscure the stolen funds by routing a portion through cryptocurrency exchange Binance and non-custodial swap service ChangeNow. Key compromises represent one of the most damaging attack vectors in crypto infrastructure, as they bypass smart contract audits entirely. Blockchain researchers flagged the incident, though the full mechanics of how the key was obtained remain under investigation. The exploit adds to a growing list of cross-chain bridge hacks, a sector that has collectively lost billions of dollars to security breaches in recent years.
