Perpetuals trading platform Ostium suspended its operations following an apparent exploit that drained roughly $18 million from one of its vaults. Onchain data indicates the attacker converted the stolen USDC into ETH before dispersing the proceeds across multiple wallets, a common tactic used to obscure the movement of illicit funds and complicate recovery efforts. The pause halts trading activity while the team investigates the incident and assesses the extent of the damage. Vault exploits remain a persistent threat across decentralized finance, where smart contract vulnerabilities can allow attackers to siphon large sums quickly. The breach adds to a growing list of DeFi security incidents that have resulted in significant losses this year. Ostium has not yet detailed how the attacker gained access or whether affected users will be compensated for the missing funds.
