The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned several Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges, including Nobitex, accusing them of facilitating illicit financial activity within Iran's broader crypto ecosystem. The designations target platforms alleged to have enabled terrorist financing by allowing funds to move through digital asset networks in violation of US sanctions law. Nobitex is Iran's largest domestic crypto exchange by volume. By adding these entities to its Specially Designated Nationals list, OFAC effectively blocks any US persons or businesses from transacting with them and freezes any assets under US jurisdiction. The move reflects Washington's continued efforts to close regulatory gaps that allow sanctioned states to use cryptocurrency infrastructure to circumvent traditional financial controls and fund activities deemed threats to national security.
